New Delhi, May 2: Congress leader Pawan Khera expressed that the anticipatory bail he received from the Supreme Court serves as a reminder to those who exploit governmental authority that individual freedom should not be compromised for political motives.
In a recent social media update, Khera extended his gratitude to the Supreme Court and the Congress leadership following the granting of his anticipatory bail.
"I appreciate the Hon'ble Supreme Court for reinforcing the rule of law, and I am thankful to Abhishek Singhvi and the AICC Law Department for their prompt and unwavering support. For the second time, Dr. Singhvi and his capable team - Muhammad Khan and Omar Hoda - have safeguarded my rights amidst ongoing threats and intimidation from the Chief Minister of Assam," he stated.
Khera expressed his heartfelt thanks to senior party figures including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, K C Venugopal, and Jairam Ramesh for their steadfast encouragement and backing.
"This bail is not just a personal achievement and a relief for me, but also a reminder to those who misuse state power that in a constitutional democracy, personal freedom cannot be sacrificed for political vendetta. No matter how overwhelming falsehood may appear, it is ultimately the truth that prevails. Satyameva Jayate!" Khera added in his post.
The Supreme Court had granted Khera bail on Friday in connection with allegations he made against the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, indicating that the issue seems to arise from political rivalry.
A bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar issued the order for pre-arrest bail with specific conditions, having reserved their decision on the matter the previous Thursday.
The Supreme Court emphasized in its ruling that "the right to personal liberty is a fundamental right that must be protected, and any infringement must meet a higher standard, especially when political implications are evident."
The Congress party welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling, asserting that the law prevails above all. They also called on Chief Minister Sarma to reconsider his "deeply inappropriate" remarks that undermine democratic standards.
Singhvi urged Sarma to reflect on whether it is appropriate for someone in a constitutional role to use such language against Khera, as noted by the Supreme Court in its ruling, and encouraged him to apologize.
In response, Sarma countered that he does not require lessons on democracy, public discourse, or civility from anyone, particularly Singhvi, and declared that this is merely "the beginning and not the conclusion."
