Guwahati, May 31: On Sunday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans to expand the state’s Council of Ministers on June 5.
In a message shared on X, CM Sarma expressed, "I am happy to announce that the Council of Ministers for the Government of Assam will see an expansion on June 5, 2026."
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a remarkable third term on May 4, winning 102 out of 126 seats in the Assembly, thereby continuing its governance in Assam for a third consecutive term.
Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister for his second consecutive term on May 12 at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Alongside CM Sarma, several others including Rameswar Teli, Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro also took their oaths as Cabinet Ministers.
While the Chief Minister has not provided details regarding potential changes or new appointments in the Cabinet, there has been considerable speculation in Assam's political circles about a reshuffle and expansion within the BJP-led government.
This expansion is anticipated to address vacant positions in the Council of Ministers and may also involve a redistribution of responsibilities among current ministers.
At present, the Cabinet comprises only four ministers in addition to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to a previous notification from the Governor, senior BJP leader Rameswar Teli has been assigned the departments of Transformation and Development, Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare.
The inclusion of Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare in Teli's responsibilities is considered significant, reflecting the government's ongoing commitment to welfare programs for tea garden communities throughout Assam.
Atul Bora, President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has been tasked with overseeing the departments of Panchayat and Rural Development, Implementation of the Assam Accord, Border Protection and Development, and Excise.
Additionally, Charan Boro from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has been given charge of the Transport department along with the Welfare of Bodoland.
This allocation is expected to enhance developmental coordination in the Bodoland Territorial Region and improve the state's transport infrastructure.
Ajanta Neog, a senior BJP leader, has been assigned the Women and Child Development and Tourism departments.
