Political Violence Erupts in West Bengal Following Election Results
Ongoing Violence in West Bengal
The aftermath of the historic West Bengal assembly elections has seen a surge in violence across various regions of the state. In Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, the personal assistant of prominent BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead on Wednesday night. This incident has once again raised concerns about political vendetta and law enforcement in the state.
Details of the Incident
Describing the murder as a "premeditated killing" and a "personal loss," Adhikari urged BJP workers to maintain peace. Rath, who had been working closely with Adhikari for several years, was attacked in Madhyamgram, where he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a private hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Calling it a "tragic murder," Adhikari stated that the police assured him of appropriate action in the case. He remarked to reporters, "Several incidents have occurred in nearby areas. The police are investigating the matter thoroughly. This was a premeditated murder, and it is a personal loss for me. I appeal to all BJP workers to maintain peace. This is a tragic murder, and the police have assured us of proper action." The incident has caused a stir in political circles, escalating tensions in the region.
Allegations of Conspiracy
Shortly after the incident, state BJP leader Arjun Singh made shocking allegations against Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, accusing him of orchestrating the attack. Singh stated, "Abhishek Banerjee has conspired this murder. They want to send a message that even if they are not in power, they still hold influence over us." He added, "They are foolish. They will face consequences for this."
Planned Ambush Details
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the attack was not spontaneous but rather a "planned ambush."
Pursuit and Encirclement: Rath's vehicle was followed by two others (one car and one motorcycle). Near Madhyamgram, the car overtook Rath's vehicle, forcing it to stop.
Accurate Shooting: As the car slowed down, the assailants on the motorcycle began firing at close range. Rath was hit by three bullets in the chest, abdomen, and head.
Weapon Clue: The cartridges recovered from the scene suggest the use of an Austrian-made Glock pistol, indicating the involvement of professional criminals in the attack.
Investigation: DGP Siddharth Nath Gupta confirmed that a vehicle used by the attackers has been seized, with its license plate tampered. CCTV footage from Jessore Road is currently being reviewed.
Forensic Evidence and CCTV Footage
Sources indicate that the shell casings found at the scene suggest the use of a small firearm, likely a Glock pistol manufactured in Austria. However, investigators caution that the exact weapon will only be confirmed after forensic analysis. Sources stated, "Forensic examination will reveal what type of weapon was used."
Forensic Clues and CCTV Footage: Images from the scene show bullet marks on the car window, reflecting the intensity of the attack. Investigators have recovered empty cartridges and live rounds from the site.
DGP Siddharth Nath Gupta confirmed that a vehicle linked to the case has been stopped. He stated, "The license plate was tampered with. We have seized the vehicle and recovered fired cartridges and live rounds. Several CCTV footages are being analyzed."
Police teams are examining footage from Jessore Road and surrounding areas to track the suspects' movements. Ongoing investigations also involve questioning local eyewitnesses.
Victim's Background and Political Connections
Rath was considered a trusted aide of Adhikari and had been closely associated with him for many years. He was actively involved in political activities, including the notable Bhabanipur elections. Senior BJP leader Keya Ghosh claimed that Rath was targeted due to his political role, stating, "He worked tirelessly for Suvendu Adhikari. This was not a random incident," suggesting that political rivalry may be behind the murder.
Political Fallout
This incident has rapidly become a focal point of political controversy. BJP leaders have accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of involvement. BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari remarked, "We were promoting a message of peace, but TMC has made a grave mistake." However, TMC condemned the murder and denied the allegations. In a statement, the party referenced recent incidents where its own workers were targeted and called for a court-monitored investigation. The party asserted, "There is no place for violence and political murders in democracy. The culprits must be identified and punished." Senior police officials have arrived at the scene, and multiple teams are working to identify the attackers and uncover the motive behind the assault.
Increased Tensions Following Another Shooting
In a separate incident in Bashirhat, a young man named Rohit Roy, also known as Chintu, was injured during a scuffle reportedly related to a dispute over party flags. Following the shooting, tensions escalated in the area, further exacerbating an already volatile situation in parts of the state.
Post-Election Violence
This attack comes amid sporadic incidents of violence following the BJP's significant electoral victory in West Bengal. In this election, the BJP won 207 out of 294 assembly seats, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has instructed relevant authorities to promptly arrest those involved in the violence and vandalism that occurred post-election. This directive followed separate incidents of violence resulting in the deaths of one BJP and one TMC worker.
According to police, BJP worker Madhu Mandal died on Tuesday evening after allegedly being beaten by TMC supporters during a victory procession in New Town. Earlier that day, TMC worker Abir Sheikh was reportedly killed by BJP workers with sharp weapons in Birbhum.
In previous incidents of arson and vandalism, a crowd attacked the election office of TMC candidate and former minister Arup Biswas in the Tollygunge area. Some individuals were seen kicking broken hoardings before leaving the scene. At Ruby Crossing in Kasba, a crowd carrying BJP flags vandalized the office of TMC councilor Sushant Ghosh. In the Panihati assembly constituency, where the mother of a rape-murder victim defeated TMC's Tirthankar Ghosh by 28,836 votes, a party office was vandalized overnight, with posters and hoardings torn down during the attack.
