Allegations of Police Violence During Student Protests

New Delhi: On Friday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced that the Opposition would collectively address the alleged deployment of pellet guns against students during the police's July 20 intervention in the Cockroach Janta Party's 'Sansad Chalo' march towards Parliament. They are calling for accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah regarding this incident.

Sagarika Ghose, who serves as the TMC's deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, asserted that there is now evidence indicating that security personnel employed pellet guns against peaceful student demonstrators.

Ghose condemned the actions of the Modi administration, stating, "Evidence has surfaced showing that security forces used lethal pellet guns, which can cause blindness, against our defenseless children who were protesting for a fair examination system on the streets." This statement was made in a post on X.

In outlining the Opposition's strategy, Ghose mentioned, "Today, a united Opposition will voice their dissent in Parliament against the police's violent actions towards unarmed students, the NEET examination crisis, and the heartbreaking issue of student suicides."

In response to Ghose's remarks, Derek O'Brien, the TMC's leader in the Rajya Sabha, emphasized that merely dismissing a minister is insufficient. He insisted that both the Prime Minister and Home Minister must be held responsible.

The controversy surrounding the alleged use of pellet guns escalated after images and videos emerged depicting injuries sustained by protesters.

At least one student has reportedly suffered a severe eye injury and is currently receiving medical care.

Despite the Delhi Police's denial of using pellet guns, Opposition parties are pressing for a parliamentary discussion on this matter.
