Violence Erupts in West Bengal After Election Results

The aftermath of the election results in West Bengal has spiraled into alarming violence. On Wednesday night, Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to BJP leader and opposition leader in the assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was brutally murdered in Madhyamgram, located near Kolkata. This incident raises serious concerns regarding the state's law and order situation and political stability. The BJP has labeled this act as a 'targeted killing' and has launched a fierce attack on the ruling TMC, accusing them of orchestrating a calculated conspiracy amid rising political tensions following their significant electoral victory.

This murder occurred less than 48 hours after the announcement of the closely contested assembly election results, sending shockwaves through the political landscape of Bengal. While the BJP has accused the TMC of inciting violence out of revenge, the party led by Mamata Banerjee has retaliated, claiming that their own workers are facing attacks in several districts. Notably, Suvendu Adhikari had defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by over 15,000 votes in her stronghold of Bhawanipur, preventing her from becoming a legislator.

Details of Chandranath Rath's Murder

Initial reports indicate that Rath was attacked around 10:30 PM near Dolatala in Madhyamgram. Assailants on motorcycles allegedly pursued his vehicle, forced it to stop, and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses reported that Rath's SUV was first halted by a small four-wheeler near Dohariya Junction. Shortly after, a motorcyclist approached and fired multiple rounds at close range. The occupants of the four-wheeler later abandoned their vehicle and escaped on the motorcycle.

Another eyewitness claimed that the attackers fired at close range, suggesting that the assault appeared to be meticulously planned. Four shots were fired at the vehicle, with two bullets striking Rath directly.

Police and forensic teams have collected samples from the scene and from the white Scorpio vehicle Rath was traveling in, which was targeted during the shooting. Authorities have also seized a small car used by the assailants to block Rath's vehicle before the attack.

Rath, who served as the executive assistant to the opposition leader in the state assembly, was returning home at the time of the attack. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was declared 'dead on arrival' by the attending doctors.

A doctor involved in his treatment stated that Rath had sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest, which penetrated his heart, and another bullet struck his abdomen. The doctor remarked, 'There was no chance of saving or reviving him.'

Rath's driver, who was injured in the shooting, has been transferred to a Kolkata hospital in critical condition.

Television footage from the scene showed the SUV's windshield shattered by bullets, with bloodstains inside the vehicle, as heavy police presence was noted in the area amid rising tensions.

This incident has quickly become a focal point of political controversy. BJP leaders have alleged that the murder was politically motivated, accusing the TMC leadership of inciting violence following the election results.

Suvendu Adhikari arrived at the hospital around midnight, describing the murder as a 'heart-wrenching' event and asserting that the attackers had conducted thorough reconnaissance before executing the assault. He characterized it as a 'brutal and premeditated' killing.
