TMC's Internal Strife Intensifies

In a significant setback for the opposition alliance aimed at countering Modi, Mamata Banerjee faced a major blow when 20 MPs from her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), convened a separate meeting to discuss forming a new faction. This development coincided with the India alliance meeting, raising serious questions about Banerjee's leadership.

The discontent within the TMC, which began after their disappointing performance in the West Bengal assembly elections, has now escalated beyond Kolkata and is centered in Delhi. Reports indicate that around 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs are strategizing against the party leadership at a secret location in the capital, while Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee are attending the alliance meeting.

Rebel MPs Consider Options

Sources reveal that the dissenting MPs are contemplating two major strategies: one involves writing to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to seek recognition as an independent faction separate from Abhishek Banerjee's parliamentary unit, while the other option is to resign collectively. Implementing either plan would represent a significant political blow to Mamata Banerjee on a national scale. It is anticipated that the rebel MPs may meet with Speaker Birla during his visit to Delhi on Tuesday.

Concerns Over Party Unity

However, close associates of Mamata Banerjee assert that the number of dissenting MPs is not as high as reported. They caution that if the numbers are insufficient, the anti-defection law could be invoked against the rebel MPs. Nonetheless, anxiety is mounting within the party regarding the growing discontent.

Interestingly, West Bengal's Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, was also in Delhi at the same time. Reports suggest that several rebel MPs visited the residence of Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, where Adhikari was present, fueling speculation about a potential larger split within the TMC.

Resignations Shake TMC Further

The TMC received another blow when senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukendu Shekhar Roy resigned from both the party and the Rajya Sabha. In his resignation, he described the mandate received by the BJP in West Bengal as historic, attributing it to the public's discontent with the TMC's alleged misgovernance over the past 15 years, including issues of corruption and failures in various sectors.

Roy emphasized that he made this decision to honor the people's verdict. He also noted that the new government in the state has already begun working towards development and reconstruction, although he has not yet announced his next political move.

Leadership Changes Amidst Crisis

In light of the escalating crisis, Mamata Banerjee has initiated significant organizational changes. While retaining Abhishek Banerjee as the national general secretary, the party has appointed Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen as joint national secretaries. Political analysts view this move as an attempt to limit Abhishek Banerjee's influence and to bring senior leaders into the fold.

According to a senior MP from the TMC, the primary source of dissatisfaction within the party stems from Abhishek Banerjee's leadership style. This has prompted Mamata Banerjee to strive for balance within the organization and to preserve her credibility on a national level. However, the open expression of discontent among MPs and leaders indicates that the TMC is facing one of its most significant political crises.
