Political Turmoil in TMC: Key MP Joins BJP Meeting Amidst Party Discontent
TMC MP's Unexpected Appearance at BJP Meeting
Following the recent electoral defeat, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is experiencing significant internal strife. In a surprising turn of events, senior TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attended a review meeting led by Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari in Kalyani on Tuesday, accompanied by six legislators.
Dastidar, who had publicly expressed her disappointment with the party's treatment and recently resigned from her organizational position, was seen at an official BJP platform during a time when the political landscape in West Bengal is rapidly shifting.
Legislators Join Forces at the Meeting
In addition to the Barasat MP, other attendees included TMC legislators Anisur Rahman Biswas from Deganga, Bina Mandal from Swarupnagar, Mohammad Abdul Mateen from Haroa, and three more from the Bashirhat region. The meeting took place at the APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium, gathering officials and elected representatives from North 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Hooghly districts.
However, political analysts believe that Dastidar's presence holds more significance than the meeting's stated administrative purpose. Just two days prior, she had resigned from her position as the organizational district president of TMC in Barasat.
Social Media Post Sparks Speculation
Before this, Dastidar had been removed from her role as the chief whip of the parliamentary party, with Kalyan Banerjee taking her place. She posted on social media, reflecting on her four-decade-long loyalty to the party, stating, 'Since 1976, my journey began in 1984. Today, I reap the rewards of my four decades of dedication.' This post fueled speculation about the growing discontent within the party, making her attendance at the meeting politically significant.
Despite the swirling rumors, Dastidar attempted to downplay the situation, briefly stating, 'Administration belongs to everyone.' The TMC legislators present echoed her sentiment, asserting that they were there solely to discuss developmental issues.
Legislators Emphasize Developmental Concerns
Bina Mandal mentioned, 'I came here for the development of my constituency. All six of us legislators are present.' Abdul Mateen added, 'The state government invited us, so I am here as a legislator.' Anisur Rahman Biswas highlighted the need for government support for the many underdeveloped areas in his constituency.
Later, the Chief Minister remarked that this meeting signifies a shift from West Bengal's traditional political culture. He noted, 'When we were in opposition, we were not invited to administrative meetings. We decided that legislators would be invited now.'
Support from Within TMC
Dastidar received a positive response from the meeting, and several opposition legislators from Bashirhat also participated. Interestingly, this development garnered support from within the TMC as well. Party legislator Ritabrata Banerjee, who recently criticized a faction of the party leadership, welcomed the involvement of TMC MPs and legislators, calling it a healthy democratic process. He lamented, 'It is unfortunate that this process has not been followed in the last 15 years.'
