Political Landscape in Tamil Nadu
Despite emerging as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, the TVK party led by Vijay may be facing significant challenges. Discussions are ongoing in political circles regarding an unprecedented alliance between DMK and AIADMK to form the government, while the Tamilaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK) is struggling to gather the necessary numbers to prove its majority to the governor. This was clearly indicated during two recent meetings between Vijay and the governor over the past two days.
On Thursday, Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Arlekar for the second time to assert his claim to form the government as the largest party. However, reports suggest that the governor informed him that TVK currently lacks the required support of 118 legislators to establish a majority in the assembly and asked him to return with a sufficient number of lawmakers. Following this, the DMK convened a meeting of its legislative party, while around 40 AIADMK legislators remained at a resort in Puducherry, as the numbers game for government formation continued.
After the DMK meeting, party leaders stated that although the public has given them a mandate to sit in opposition, party president M.K. Stalin will have the authority to make any political decisions if necessary. This statement has reignited speculation about a potential agreement or alliance between DMK and AIADMK to keep TVK out of power. Meanwhile, sources indicated that after the meeting at the resort, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami urged party legislators to remain united and hinted that good news might be on the horizon.
The delay from the governor's office and statements from the two major Dravidian parties have led TVK to suspect a political conspiracy. According to party sources, if DMK and AIADMK manage to form a government with their allies, TVK legislators are contemplating collective resignations. However, political analysts view this warning from TVK as a strategy to exert pressure on both the governor and rival Dravidian parties.
