Political Turmoil in Tamil Nadu: CPM's Warning to TVK Government
A Significant Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu's political landscape witnessed a major development when senior leader P. Shanmugam from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) made a startling announcement. He issued a clear warning that if the newly elected government decides to include the rebel faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in its cabinet, the CPI(M) would reconsider its external support for the ruling party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
Why Did Left Parties Support the Vijay Government?
During a press briefing, Shanmugam clarified that the left parties extended their support to the TVK government, led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, under specific circumstances. Their primary aim was to avert any possibility of President's Rule in the state, as such a scenario could allow the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to gain entry through the backdoor. According to Shanmugam, Tamil Nadu was not prepared for another immediate assembly election, especially after voters had decisively rejected both major alliances, DMK and AIADMK, in the recent elections. In a hung assembly situation, TVK emerged as the largest party capable of forming a stable government.
Leftists Assert: The Mandate Should Not Be Distorted
Shanmugam emphasized that supporting or including the AIADMK's rebel faction would contradict the public mandate and undermine TVK's commitment to transparent governance. He stated, "I believe that TVK will not go that far (to include the AIADMK rebels in the cabinet), and if they do, CPI(M) will reconsider its support for TVK."
Victory in Floor Test: Support from AIADMK Rebels
Vijay's TVK achieved a historic milestone in Tamil Nadu by breaking the traditional two-party hold, yet when the results were announced on May 4, they fell short of an outright majority. The party secured 108 seats out of 234, missing the majority mark by 10 seats. After several days of uncertainty, TVK received crucial backing from Congress, which won five seats, along with support from eight legislators representing left parties, VCK, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
When the confidence vote took place on May 13, Vijay had the backing of 144 legislators. Notably, 24 AIADMK legislators, who had always intended to support him, defied their party's whip on voting day, prompting disciplinary actions from the AIADMK leadership, including steps under the anti-defection law.
