Political Turmoil in South India: DMK Critiques Congress Leadership
Political Crisis in South India
Following the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, a significant upheaval in South Indian politics has emerged, posing a major challenge for the opposition's 'INDIA' alliance at the national level. The tension between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its former ally, Congress, has become increasingly apparent. In a pointed editorial published in DMK's official publication, questions were raised regarding Rahul Gandhi's diplomatic acumen and credibility.
On June 8, after a meeting of the INDIA bloc in New Delhi, the editorial criticized Gandhi's reliability in coalition politics, arguing that many of the current issues within the alliance stem from Congress's own actions.
Criticism of Rahul Gandhi's Statements
The editorial posed a provocative question: "If the INDIA alliance has produced poison instead of nectar, who is primarily responsible for stirring it?" This critique followed Gandhi's remark during the INDIA bloc meeting, where he suggested that Congress should accept criticism from its allies, likening it to Lord Shiva consuming poison.
Referencing this statement, the editorial pointed out that in the mythological tale Gandhi mentioned, Shiva did not create the poison; it emerged when the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean in search of nectar, and Shiva drank it to save the world.
Focus on Internal Party Dynamics
Using this example, the editorial redirected its focus to Congress, questioning whether the party had contributed to the divisions now troubling the opposition alliance. It argued that Gandhi's call for unity came too late, stating, "Gandhi has only recently spoken about the need for opposition unity. Shouldn't he have realized this sooner, given that he has weakened this unity in several states?"
While Gandhi urged coalition partners to unite with love and affection, the editorial claimed that Congress's political behavior often told a different story.
Revisiting Kerala's Political Landscape
A significant portion of the editorial focused on Congress's relationship with leftist parties in Kerala. It recalled Gandhi's previous campaign statements accusing the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of colluding with the BJP.
According to the editorial, leftist leaders strongly objected to these comments. It mentioned CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, who accused Gandhi of spreading falsehoods about a secret deal between leftists and the BJP, and CPI General Secretary D. Raja, who labeled Gandhi's remarks as an example of "political immaturity."
Concerns Over Congress's Approach
The editorial raised concerns about whether Congress was targeting its allies more aggressively than its political opponents. To support this argument, it pointed out criticisms of Congress from various components of the INDIA alliance.
It noted that Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav expressed concern over the absence of DMK and Aam Aadmi Party representatives at a recent INDIA alliance meeting, and highlighted RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's worries regarding Congress's behavior in Bihar. The meeting, initially called to discuss opposition unity, gradually became a platform for coalition partners to voice their dissatisfaction with Congress.
DMK's IT Wing Critiques Congress
The criticism was not limited to the editorial. In a separate social media attack, DMK's IT wing accused Congress of abandoning the alliance after gaining electoral advantages.
The post stated, "When the INC was struggling for its political existence, we supported them, but as soon as they spotted a new shiny toy, they left us behind." The message concluded with a direct jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, labeling him as "a huge joke."
Strained Relations Between DMK and Congress
This criticism comes at a time when relations between DMK and Congress have become quite strained. After winning five seats as part of the DMK-led alliance in the 2026 assembly elections, Congress later exited the coalition to join the government led by actor-politician Vijay's TVK.
Drawing comparisons to national politics, the editorial accused Congress of repeatedly undermining DMK despite benefiting from the alliance. It also claimed that the decision of Congress legislators to join the ruling coalition was made without the knowledge and approval of the party's central leadership.
