Political Turmoil in Maharashtra Ahead of Municipal Elections
Internal Strife in the Samajwadi Party
As Maharashtra prepares for its municipal elections, unrest has resurfaced within the Samajwadi Party (SP). A political clash has erupted between party MLA Rais Sheikh and the state president, Abu Azmi. On January 3, Sheikh expressed serious concerns in a letter to the national president, Akhilesh Yadav, regarding Azmi's actions. In his correspondence, Sheikh accused Azmi of deliberately harassing him and causing significant disruptions within the party. Reports indicate that Akhilesh Yadav's planned campaign visit for the BMC elections has been canceled, as confirmed by a party official.
Allegations of Mismanagement
In the letter sent to Akhilesh, Sheikh alleged that Azmi had arbitrarily distributed tickets for the Bhivandi and Mumbai municipal elections. Sheikh claimed that Azmi was disregarding the interests of party workers and potential candidates. According to the MLA, this mismanagement is fostering discontent among party members and jeopardizing the party's prospects in these crucial elections. Sheikh further noted that Azmi's public statements have heightened concerns within the party.
Future Decisions Post-Election
The party may address this conflict between Sheikh and Azmi following the election results. The Samajwadi Party is considered strong in Mumbai's key constituencies, including Bhivandi and surrounding areas. In the previous elections, the SP secured seven municipal seats in Mumbai, with one from Bhaykhala and six from Govandi. Rais Sheikh has previously served as a municipal councilor from Bhaykhala and had requested a ticket for his preferred candidate. However, the party did not grant this request, leading him to support his close associate, Wakar, who is contesting on a Congress ticket.
