Internal Strife in Karnataka Congress

A significant political development has emerged amidst the ongoing internal conflict regarding the chief minister position within the Karnataka Congress. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been summoned to Delhi on Tuesday (May 26) for a crucial meeting with the Congress leadership. According to sources from a news agency, during this visit, Siddaramaiah may also meet with top leader Rahul Gandhi. This unexpected call has reignited speculations about a potential leadership change in the state.

Discussion on Upcoming Elections

The official agenda for this meeting includes upcoming organizational and electoral strategies. It is anticipated that Siddaramaiah will discuss key topics such as:

  • Rajya Sabha Elections: Conversations regarding candidate selection and strategies for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections are expected.
  • Legislative Council Elections: Preparations and ticket distribution for the forthcoming Legislative Council elections in Karnataka will also be deliberated.

However, political circles are buzzing with the notion that the real discussions will revolve around the leadership of the state government and the chief minister's position.

Previous Meetings with Party Leaders

Earlier, on May 20, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge held discussions with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Sources indicate that Kharge traveled from Thiruvananthapuram to Bengaluru with Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar, and other senior leaders. Subsequently, they met at the residence of state Energy Minister K.J. George. Reports suggest that the recent political developments and ongoing speculations regarding the chief minister position were key topics of discussion during this meeting.

Power Struggle in Karnataka

This situation has unfolded as the Congress government marks three years in office, coinciding with a prolonged power struggle between Siddaramaiah and his deputy, D.K. Shivakumar. Following the completion of half of their term last November, the issue of leadership sharing gained momentum, leading to renewed speculation about a 'rotational chief minister' arrangement.

For the past 18 months, Shivakumar's supporters have consistently claimed that he would soon assume the chief minister role, yet no changes have materialized. A senior party official remarked, 'The same issue has been reiterated for the last three years.'

Reports indicate growing discontent within the state unit, with several leaders urging the high command to resolve this uncertainty swiftly. They argue that this prolonged ambiguity is damaging the party's image in Karnataka. Following Siddaramaiah's summons to Delhi on May 26, all eyes are now on the outcomes of his meeting with the high command.
