Supreme Court's Ruling Sparks Political Debate in Bihar

The Supreme Court's recent decision to allow the continuation of the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar has ignited a political uproar in the state. On Thursday, the apex court deemed this review a 'constitutional obligation' while granting permission to the Election Commission to proceed with the SIR. Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi raised concerns regarding the timing of this exercise, suggesting that documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, and ration cards could be considered valid during the review process.

The court posed pointed questions to the Election Commission regarding the SIR in Bihar, urging it to contemplate the inclusion of Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, and ration cards as legitimate documents for the ongoing voter enumeration campaign. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear several petitions challenging the timing and methodology of the SIR, with the next hearing scheduled for July 28. The Election Commission has been given until July 21 to submit its response, and no interim orders have been issued as of yet.

Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh commented on the situation, stating that while the government promotes Aadhaar as 'my identity,' it now claims its validity has diminished. He emphasized that the Election Commission should take this matter seriously and act appropriately. The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its verdict on July 28, and Singh urged the NDA to cooperate in this process. He noted that while the BJP may be focused on voter manipulation, other parties must recognize the ongoing political game.
