Nitish Kumar's Political Move Sparks Speculation
Just four months after taking the oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time, Nitish Kumar submitted his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, igniting intense political activity in Patna and raising questions about who will succeed him as Chief Minister. The leader of the Janata Dal (United), Kumar has dominated the state's political landscape for over two decades.
Potential Successors Emerge
With Kumar heading to the Rajya Sabha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may seize the opportunity to install its own Chief Minister. Several names are being discussed within the party, but Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is widely considered the frontrunner. A prominent leader from the Kushwaha OBC community, Chaudhary has steadily strengthened his political standing within both the party and the state government over recent years. His role in the NDA government and experience working alongside Kumar have bolstered his administrative credentials.
Other Contenders in the Mix
Another significant name in the conversation is Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. As a leading Yadav leader in the BJP, Rai has served as a junior minister under Home Minister Amit Shah for several years. Political analysts believe that his promotion could send a strong message to the Yadav community, traditionally seen as a key support base for the opposition. This community has long been politically associated with leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Dilip Jaiswal: A Possible Candidate
In addition to Chaudhary and Rai, Bihar Minister and former state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal is also being considered as a potential candidate. Associated with the Vaishya (Kalwar) community, Jaiswal is viewed as a relatively moderate and organizationally reliable leader. His political influence, particularly around the Seemanchal region, especially Kishanganj, is seen as a significant asset.
Vijay Sinha and Other Names
Like Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Sinha also serves as a Deputy Chief Minister in the current government. His strongest asset is the trust placed in him by the RSS. Known as a loyal and long-standing leader within the organization, Sinha entered BJP politics through the RSS and is considered one of its core members. He is also regarded as close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. However, the BJP high command often surprises with unexpected nominations, which could include MLA Dr. Sajeeb Chaurasia. He first won the Digha seat in 2015 and has been actively involved in politics, holding a significant position in the party's organizational and electoral strategies in Bihar.
