Political Turmoil in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections

Political Tensions Rise in Assam

As the first phase of voting for the Assam Assembly elections approaches on April 9, political tensions have escalated in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has categorically dismissed financial allegations against his wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma, made by the Congress party, claiming they are part of a 'foreign conspiracy' with 'Pakistani connections.' Legal action has already commenced, with an FIR filed regarding the matter.

Congress Raises Questions About Financial Records

The allegations surfaced when Congress leaders questioned the financial and personal records of Sarma's wife during the current electoral climate. This controversy ignited after Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, held press conferences in New Delhi and Guwahati, asserting that Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma possesses three passports and controls assets worth ₹52,000 crores through a company based in Wyoming.

Sarma Accuses Congress of Using Pakistani Sources

Sarma Claims 'Pakistan Link'

In a strong rebuttal, Sarma alleged that the materials used in the Congress press conference were sourced from a Pakistani social media network. He stated, 'During our research, we discovered that the entire content of the press conference was supplied by a Pakistani social media group.' He further noted that Pakistani media channels have recently engaged in unusually extensive discussions about the Assam elections, all favoring Congress. Sarma claimed that at least 11 talk shows in Pakistan have focused on the Assam elections in the past ten days, describing this as an unprecedented attempt to influence the electoral environment.

Legal Action Initiated Against Allegations

FIR Filed, Legal Consequences Loom

Sarma confirmed that his wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma, has filed an FIR against what she termed 'fabricated and defamatory allegations.' He warned that using forged documents to influence elections could lead to severe legal repercussions, potentially under IPC sections 420 (fraud) and 468 (forgery), which are now included in the Indian Penal Code (BNS). Sarma emphasized, 'Using fraudulent documents to sway election results can result in harsh penalties, including life imprisonment.'

Claims of Fake Companies and Documents

Allegations of Shell Companies Dismissed

Refuting Congress's claims, Sarma argued that establishing shell companies abroad is relatively simple and accused his opponents of fabricating evidence. He remarked, 'Anyone can register a company by paying 199 USD. Following yesterday's press conference, they even created another company in Rinki's name.' He reiterated that the documents presented by Congress leaders, including passport images, were 'fabricated' and obtained from dubious foreign entities.
