Political Turmoil Following Kharge's Controversial Remarks on PM Modi
Political Fallout from Kharge's Comments
The remarks made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, labeling Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'terrorist', have stirred significant controversy in Indian politics. In response to the uproar and strong objections from the BJP, Kharge issued a clarification on Tuesday, asserting that his words were misinterpreted.
Kharge's Clarification: "My comments were not a personal attack but addressed institutional misuse."
Speaking to reporters in Kalaburagi, Kharge clarified that his criticism was directed at the Prime Minister's governance style and the alleged misuse of central agencies. Key points from his clarification include:
Context of Promoting Terrorism: Kharge stated, "I did not personally label the PM as a terrorist. I meant that he is promoting 'political terrorism' to intimidate and silence the opposition during elections."
Fear from Agencies: He accused agencies like the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department of being used to 'terrorize' opposition leaders and weaken them in the electoral process.
Speech in Chennai: Kharge emphasized that his comments during a speech in Chennai were also about how democracy is being threatened through raids.
Kharge's Statements on Agency Misuse
Kharge informed reporters that his remarks were aimed at the tax raids and investigations conducted by central agencies, which he claims are being utilized to intimidate political adversaries.
He reiterated, "I did not call the PM a terrorist. I stated that he is fostering terrorism to instill fear among people. He is attempting to silence them through raids and trying to defeat them in elections. I made the same point in Chennai."
BJP's Response and Complaint to Election Commission
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, deeming Kharge's comments as "extremely derogatory" and a violation of the model code of conduct. The BJP's letter stated that describing the Prime Minister as a 'terrorist' constitutes personal defamation, improper interference in free electoral choice, and prima facie defamation under various laws.
BJP leaders reacted strongly to Kharge's clarification. National spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Congress of undermining the Constitution and promoting hatred, while Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanded apologies from Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Goyal remarked, "This unholy alliance effectively labels Indians as terrorists by targeting the Prime Minister. Such personal attacks will not alter their electoral fate." BJP IT chief Amit Malviya and spokesperson Sambit Patra also dismissed Kharge's clarification, alleging that the comments were deliberate and politically motivated.
Kharge's Position on Institutional Misuse
Kharge maintained that his criticism was aimed at institutional misuse rather than a personal attack on the Prime Minister. Speaking alongside AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, he stated, "He is terrorizing people and political parties. I never claimed he is a terrorist in the literal sense. He is misusing his power and government machinery against opposition parties."
