The long-awaited elections for the President and Vice-President of the Shimla Zila Parishad have escalated into a significant political clash in Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur have exchanged sharp criticisms as tensions mount.

Jairam Thakur has threatened to organize protests and a sit-in due to the delays in the election process. In response, Chief Minister Sukhu accused the BJP of engaging in 'political theatrics' and questioned the rationale behind relocating Zila Parishad members instead of allowing them to participate in the electoral process.

Sukhu directly challenged Thakur, suggesting that he should have joined the members in their protest rather than transporting them to Panchkula. This remark added further fuel to an already charged political environment.

The Chief Minister asserted that the district administration had arranged a meeting to facilitate the elections but claimed that the BJP had moved Zila Parishad members out of Himachal Pradesh at the same time. He raised concerns about the BJP's motives, asking, 'What is the panic? Why are elected representatives being taken outside the state?'

Sukhu emphasized that the elections for the Zila Parishad President and Vice-President would proceed 'under all circumstances,' insisting that no force could disrupt the democratic process. He stated that there were no administrative barriers to conducting the elections, alleging that there were intentional efforts to delay the proceedings.

In a pointed political jab, Sukhu remarked that some members had also been taken to Rajasthan recently. 'If the BJP wants, it can arrange more tours and sightseeing for them before bringing them back for the election. The government will welcome them,' he quipped, escalating the political rhetoric.

Sukhu further questioned the BJP's tactics, asking why Zila Parishad members were being 'kept in hotels at various locations' and what the opposition was attempting to evade. He noted that elections in other districts had already been completed, questioning why Shimla was being treated differently.

'The BJP needs to clarify why there is such anxiety surrounding the Shimla Zila Parishad elections,' Sukhu stated, accusing the opposition of creating unnecessary drama.

BDC and Zila Parishad Members Under Scrutiny

The Chief Minister also commented on the roles of Zila Parishad and Block Development Committee (BDC) members, indicating that their importance was primarily linked to the election of key office bearers. His statements are likely to ignite further political discussions regarding the operations of local bodies.

This controversy arises as the BJP has ramped up pressure on the state government, accusing it of intentionally delaying the election process for the top positions in the Shimla Zila Parishad.

Thakur Accuses Government of Delays, Threatens Legal Action

Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has charged the state government and district administration with deliberately hindering the elections despite the results being declared. He pointed out that a significant amount of time has passed without a date being set for the election of the President and Vice-President.

Thakur has warned of taking the matter to the High Court and staging a sit-in protest if the election process is not expedited. He also claimed that the Shimla Deputy Commissioner’s office is under political pressure from the state government.

Sukhu Prioritizes Development Amid Political Turmoil

In the midst of the escalating political conflict, Chief Minister Sukhu inaugurated a new fire station at Nerwa from his official residence and launched two fire tenders. He stated that the new facility is crucial for enhancing emergency response in Nerwa and surrounding rural areas, especially for fire incidents and other emergencies.

Sukhu mentioned that the state government is investing approximately Rs 55 crore to modernize the Fire Services Department. With the new infrastructure and vehicles, he assured that residents of Nerwa and nearby areas would benefit from improved emergency response and safety services.
