SHILLONG, Nov 2: The Shillong Ropeway Project has become a contentious issue, pitting the State Government against the Voice of the People Party (VPP), with environmental implications at the forefront.
This ropeway, stretching approximately 900 meters, aims to link Lawshotun with Shillong Peak. With an estimated budget of Rs 151 crore, the initiative is designed to enhance tourism in the region.
However, local inhabitants express concerns that the project may disrupt the catchment area that provides drinking water for the city. They are also questioning the authority of traditional leaders who consented to the land transfer to the Government.
In response to the ongoing dispute, officials from the VPP-led Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) have sealed the lower terminal site of the project, citing that the construction company has not obtained a trading license.
The Government has reacted firmly, demanding the KHADC to lift the seal promptly or face legal repercussions.
Additionally, VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit has indicated that his party may escalate the matter to the Supreme Court, invoking the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Management and Control of Forests) Act, 1958.
Notably, the forest area under 'Raid'—a traditional administrative unit—is overseen by Raid heads, while the KHADC also holds authority over these forests. The Shillong Ropeway Project traverses through a Raid forest.
Despite the political disagreements between the Government and the VPP, many local residents remain apprehensive about the potential ecological impact of the project, despite assurances from the Government.
