Political Tensions Rise in West Bengal Ahead of Assembly Elections

Political Climate Heats Up Before West Bengal Elections

The political atmosphere in West Bengal is intensifying as the 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) of the voter list approaches ahead of the assembly elections. Nitin Naveen, a senior leader and state in-charge of the BJP, has launched a strong critique against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing them of undermining the rights of the people of Bengal by promoting illegal immigration. He stated that the objective of this initiative is to eliminate illegal immigrants, particularly those from Bangladesh who are attempting to acquire citizenship through dubious means.

In an interview, Naveen criticized both Banerjee and the Congress, asserting that they remained silent during critical security challenges faced by India from Pakistan.

No Need for a Nationalism Certificate

No Need for a Nationalism Certificate from Anyone

Naveen emphasized India's responses to past attacks, referencing events like the Kargil War and subsequent surgical strikes. He remarked, "Whenever Pakistan needed a response, our leadership has acted—whether during Kargil or afterward, including surgical strikes. We do not require a certificate of nationalism from them."

TMC Accused of Promoting Illegal Immigration

TMC Promotes Illegal Immigration, Claims Naveen

The BJP leader accused the TMC of encouraging illegal immigration from Bangladesh for electoral gains. He alleged that these immigrants are being provided with welfare schemes, food benefits, and assistance in getting their names added to the voter list as part of vote-bank politics.

"For them, nationalism means bringing people from Bangladesh and depriving the people of Bengal of their rights. Government schemes, food benefits, and welfare measures are being used solely for vote-bank politics—to ensure their names are added to the voter list and they receive Aadhaar cards. Who is orchestrating this game?" he questioned.

In response to criticisms that the revision of the voter list is being used for voter polarization, Naveen asserted that the BJP will continue to voice its concerns regarding illegal immigration. He emphasized that the party has not arbitrarily removed anyone's name but will take action against those attempting to gain citizenship through illegal means. "If you bring illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, we will certainly raise this issue. Have we ever removed anyone's name arbitrarily? But if illegal immigrants from Bangladesh try to acquire citizenship through wrongful means, action will be taken against them. More such actions will follow in the future," he stated.

Upcoming Elections in West Bengal

These remarks come at a time when West Bengal is gearing up for a fierce electoral battle. The elections for the 294-member state assembly are scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
