Protests Erupt Over Mayor's Comments
On Wednesday, members of the Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a protest outside the residence of Lucknow's Mayor, Sushma Kharkwal. This demonstration was in response to alleged remarks made by Kharkwal regarding the late mother of SP leader Akhilesh Yadav. The incident has sparked a new political controversy in the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
Following the opposition's claims that Kharkwal's comments were offensive, a heated exchange ensued between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition SP, leading to the protest.
Mayor Defends Her Statements
In her defense, Mayor Sushma Kharkwal asserted that her comments were misrepresented. She clarified that her remarks were not aimed at any individual’s mother but were intended to address broader issues concerning women and political leaders. Kharkwal stated, "I mentioned that half of our population consists of women, yet Akhilesh Ji and Rahul Ji, who have mothers, sisters, and daughters, have disrespected women. This country is our mother. I want to ask Akhilesh Ji where I mentioned his mother in my speech? I said they have insulted the relationships of mother, daughter, and sister."
Akhilesh Yadav Responds
On Tuesday, Akhilesh Yadav condemned Kharkwal's remarks in a Facebook post, stating that disrespecting anyone's mother is never acceptable. He urged Kharkwal not to use the name of his deceased mother to insult another woman due to political obligations. Yadav expressed, "I kindly request you to refrain from such actions in honor of womanhood. If you have elders or children at home, please ask them if your reprehensible and hateful statement is appropriate. Furthermore, as a woman yourself, how can you justify insulting another woman?"
Call for Dignity and Balance
Yadav further emphasized that disrespecting any mother in Indian society is intolerable and advised Kharkwal to maintain dignity and balance. He concluded his post by stating that had she not stooped to such a low moral level, her political future could have been bright; even her supporters are embarrassed today. He remarked that those she is trying to impress are not close relatives. "Maintain your dignity and balance. I do not expect an apology from you, as it would be meaningless after such statements. The regret you feel alone will suffice for us."
