Political Tensions Rise in Karnataka Over Budget Allocations
Ongoing Power-Sharing Disputes in Karnataka
In Karnataka, the ongoing disputes regarding power-sharing show no signs of abating. On Monday, a prominent saint, Pranavanand Swamiji, asserted that the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah earlier this month did not allocate any funds to the monasteries supporting Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Notably, Pranavanand Swamiji is an advocate for Shivakumar's elevation to the chief minister's position. This controversy ignited when Iqbal Hussain, a Congress MLA considered close to Shivakumar, publicly expressed dissatisfaction over inadequate funding for his Ramnagar constituency last week. He claimed that despite repeatedly appealing to Siddaramaiah, significant development requests were overlooked, reigniting discussions of factionalism within the Karnataka Congress.
Allegations of Political Discrimination
Further complicating the situation, Pranavanand Swamiji accused the state government of intentionally sidelining the monasteries that support Shivakumar's bid for chief minister. He claimed that the budget allocated 'not a single rupee' to these institutions, alleging political bias. He emphasized that the recent budget failed to provide any funds for the monasteries that had met with D.K. Shivakumar to advocate for his chief ministerial aspirations. Additionally, he stated that Siddaramaiah has reportedly adopted a stance of denying support to those backing Shivakumar. During a recent 700-kilometer pilgrimage to Bengaluru, where he presented community demands, Siddaramaiah allegedly conveyed to leaders that those supporting Shivakumar would not receive assistance.
Community Concerns and Continued Support
It appears that the chief minister is deeply entrenched in political maneuvering. Pranavanand Swamiji remarked that even hardworking individuals like them are now being targeted. He mentioned that the community had communicated their concerns to Shivakumar, who assured them that the issues would be addressed. Questioning the alleged discrimination, he asked why monasteries led by individuals meeting with the deputy chief minister were denied funding and land allocations, while others received benefits. Despite the ongoing controversy, Pranavanand Swamiji reaffirmed his unwavering support for Shivakumar, stating, 'We are not swamis who go back on our word. Whatever we receive, we will continue to insist that D.K. Shivakumar be made chief minister.'
