Political Climate Intensifies in Jammu and Kashmir

On May 15, the political atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir became increasingly charged as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the government led by the National Conference. The BJP issued a warning that it would physically shut down liquor stores if the government continued to prioritize revenue over ethics. Addressing reporters in Srinagar, BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur described the issue as a battle for the moral integrity of the valley. He accused the Omar Abdullah-led administration of promoting the sale of intoxicants, which he claimed contradicts the region's spiritual heritage.

BJP's Stance on Alcohol Licensing

Thakur formally warned the ruling party, indicating that if the government did not revoke its liquor licensing policies, the BJP was prepared to take independent action. He emphasized that the BJP opposes all forms of intoxicants, asserting that the National Conference aims to immerse local youth in alcohol. 'This is a land of saints, and we will not allow liquor stores to operate here. If the Omar government ignores this, we will continue our protests, and the BJP will shut down these establishments. This serves as a warning to the party that supports alcohol for revenue,' he stated.

Protests Against Alcohol Sales

On the same day, the BJP's Jammu and Kashmir unit organized protests in Srinagar against the ongoing liquor stores in the Kashmir Valley, demanding a complete ban on the sale and purchase of alcohol in the region. Party workers and leaders marched from Ram Munshi Bagh in Sonwar towards Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's residence in Gupkar. In response, Abdullah defended the government's policy on liquor stores, stating that the administration does not promote alcohol consumption but rather allows individuals the freedom to drink based on their religious beliefs.

Government's Position on Alcohol Stores

Speaking to journalists, Abdullah clarified that these liquor stores are specifically for those whose religious beliefs permit alcohol consumption. He noted that no government in Jammu and Kashmir has ever imposed a complete ban on such establishments. 'This does not mean we advocate for alcohol consumption; it simply means that those whose religious principles allow for its use are free to do so,' he added.
