In a significant escalation of the ongoing political clash between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP in Himachal Pradesh, the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has initiated a case concerning disproportionate assets against Sudhir Sharma, the BJP MLA from Dharamshala and former Urban Development Minister.
The FIR claims that Sharma has accumulated assets that are inconsistent with his known income sources from 2013 to 2023. Following a preliminary review of his financial situation, the Vigilance Bureau has invoked several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
This development occurs amid a fierce political rivalry between Sharma and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, marking this case as one of the most politically charged investigations in recent state history.
Investigation Focuses on Luxury Assets
Central to the investigation is Sharma's opulent residence located in Rakkar, near Dharamshala, along with his various movable and immovable assets amassed over the last decade.
Vigilance officials have stated that investigators will examine bank accounts, investments, property transactions, digital evidence, and other financial activities. A technical assessment will also be conducted to ascertain the actual costs incurred in constructing the residence, including its interiors and high-end furnishings.
Officials indicated that if the investigation uncovers any other individuals involved in the alleged acquisition or concealment of assets, legal actions will be pursued against them as well.
Thorough Examination of Financial Records
The Vigilance Bureau has reported that its initial inquiry involved a comprehensive review of documents sourced from various government departments, including the Income Tax Department and the Public Works Department.
Investigators have analyzed income tax returns, election affidavits, land and property records, house-building advance documents, and official property valuation reports. The Bureau noted that a comparison of these records suggested that Sharma's assets and expenditures appeared to surpass his declared lawful income, providing adequate grounds for filing a criminal case.
The FIR was filed based on a complaint from ASP Brahmdas Bhatia, with Inspector Naresh Kumar assigned to oversee the investigation.
Sharma Denies Allegations, Claims Political Motives
In response to the Vigilance Bureau's actions, Sudhir Sharma has dismissed the allegations, asserting that the Congress government is misusing investigative agencies for political retribution.
Currently in Delhi, Sharma stated he would provide a detailed response upon his return to Himachal.
"This is merely political vendetta. The Sukhu government has already subjected me to two Vigilance inquiries and one investigation by another agency. I have fully cooperated each time. They can investigate as they wish, but they must ensure their own documents and those of their associates are above reproach. The truth has nothing to fear," he remarked.
Political Rivalry Fuels the Investigation
The case carries heightened political significance as Sharma was previously a prominent Congress figure and served as Urban Development Minister under Virbhadra Singh's administration.
His relationship with Chief Minister Sukhu soured after the Congress regained power in 2022, when he was denied a Cabinet position despite being a senior MLA. Tensions escalated, culminating in a controversial Rajya Sabha election cross-voting incident, where Sharma and five other Congress MLAs voted against the party's official candidate.
Following this, their Assembly memberships were revoked, leading all six leaders to join the BJP. Sharma subsequently contested the Dharamshala by-election on a BJP ticket, successfully retaining his seat and becoming one of the BJP's most vocal critics of the Sukhu administration.
Potential for Political Turmoil Ahead
With the FIR now filed, the investigation is likely to spark a new wave of political turmoil in Himachal Pradesh. The Congress government may frame this action as part of its anti-corruption initiative, while the BJP is expected to depict it as another instance of political targeting against opposition figures.
As the investigation progresses, this case is set to become a significant political flashpoint, with both parties gearing up for a fierce battle both inside and outside the Assembly.
