Mamata Banerjee's Defiance Sparks Controversy
In response to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's refusal to resign, former Meghalaya and Tripura Governor and BJP leader Tathagata Roy has expressed his disbelief. He remarked that he has never witnessed or heard of a situation where a politician declines to resign after losing an election. He questioned whether Banerjee understands that the assembly's term will conclude on the 8th, after which she will no longer hold the position of Chief Minister. Roy suggested that her mental state might be concerning.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia took to social media to highlight that this is the first instance in independent India where a Chief Minister has refused to resign despite an electoral defeat. He accused Banerjee of clinging to power while disrespecting the sentiments of voters and the sanctity of the mandate, calling it a complete breakdown of constitutional norms. Previously, Banerjee had dismissed the election results, asserting that morally, they had won and that her resignation was out of the question.
Banerjee maintains that her party did not lose the election, vowing that they will return and continue to fight. During a press conference, she accused the BJP-led central government and central forces of committing atrocities under the guise of conducting elections, stating that she has not witnessed such oppression since 2004. The acting Chief Minister reiterated her claims of mistreatment and physical assault at the vote counting center in Bhawanipur, alleging that she was kicked in the stomach and back.
Furthermore, Banerjee indicated that her party's struggle extends beyond the BJP to include the Election Commission of India. She announced that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would take action against the commission, although she did not disclose specific details at this time. Banerjee emphasized that they are preparing to retaliate, but their strategy remains confidential.
