Congress and TMC Leaders Engage in Political Dialogue

On Thursday, a discussion took place outside the Makar Gate involving Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and suspended TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, focusing on the political ties between their parties. As Banerjee expressed his opposition to the merger of TMC MPs into the 'Nationalist Citizens Party of India' (NCPI), Priyanka Gandhi approached him, reminding him that he had previously brought them from Congress to TMC. In response, Banerjee noted that Mamata Banerjee was expelled from Congress in 1997.

Calls for Accountability Amid Ongoing Protests

Priyanka Gandhi further stated that Rajiv Gandhi had always supported Mamata Banerjee, to which Banerjee agreed. Meanwhile, Congress and other opposition parties continued their protests against the police's alleged actions against student demonstrations, linking the issue to Home Minister Amit Shah. When asked if the Home Minister should attend Parliament on Thursday, Priyanka Gandhi affirmed that he should. This exchange occurred amidst a political standoff between the ruling party and the opposition, with Congress leaders demanding answers from the Home Minister regarding parliamentary matters.

Opposition MPs Protest Police Actions

Earlier in the day, opposition MPs initiated protests at the Makar Gate within the Parliament complex, addressing the police's alleged actions against student demonstrators and the purported financial irregularities related to donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Several MPs from the India Bloc gathered around 10:30 AM, holding placards and questioning who authorized police action against student protesters on July 20 at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

Demand for Government Accountability

They chanted slogans demanding accountability from the central government regarding the alleged use of force against students and the financial discrepancies concerning donations to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. This protest occurred just hours before the Rajya Sabha was set to consider and pass the Lok Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
