Demolition of Abhishek Banerjee's Office Sparks Controversy

On Saturday, a political uproar erupted in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, following the initiation of demolition proceedings against the office of Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MP from Diamond Harbour. Bulldozers arrived at the site on Amtala-Baruipur Road to commence the demolition, which was prompted by allegations that the building was constructed without the necessary approvals.

The operation was conducted under tight security, with police and administrative officials present to maintain order. As the demolition began, a crowd of local residents and party supporters gathered nearby. This action followed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) issuance of demolition notices for 17 properties linked to Abhishek Banerjee, his family, and his company, 'Leaps and Bounds.' Among the properties listed was Banerjee's residence, 'Shantiniketan,' located on Harish Mukherjee Road. The KMC is managed by the TMC.

Following the start of the demolition, supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated and chanted slogans in favor of their party. Abhishek Banerjee represents the Diamond Harbour constituency, which includes Amtala. BJP MLA Agnishwar Naskar from Amtala claimed that the construction of Banerjee's office violated building regulations and welcomed the district administration's actions. Naskar stated that the structure was built illegally and that the administration had finally acted in accordance with the law.

A senior official indicated that the demolition was initiated in response to complaints regarding violations in the office's construction. He noted that notices were issued to the concerned parties on July 15, requiring their presence at a hearing. A senior official from the South 24 Parganas district administration confirmed that actions were taken in accordance with legal provisions following complaints about unauthorized construction. The matter is currently under review, and further actions will be determined based on the completion of hearings and relevant legal guidelines.
