Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Kerala Assembly Elections
Political Climate Intensifies in Kerala
As the Kerala Assembly elections approach on April 9, political tensions have escalated significantly. A statement made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during a rally in Idukki regarding the people of Gujarat has sparked considerable controversy. The BJP has condemned this remark, labeling it an insult to Gujarat's identity and the nation's esteemed figures, launching a broadside against Congress.
What Did Kharge Say?
While addressing a campaign rally in Idukki on Sunday, Kharge compared Kerala's literacy rates with those of other states. He targeted Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, stating, "Do not mislead the people of Kerala. They are very wise and educated. You can fool the uneducated people of Gujarat or elsewhere, but you cannot fool the people of Kerala."
BJP's Response: "An Insult to the Legacy of Gandhi and Patel"
Following Kharge's remarks, the Bharatiya Janata Party quickly retaliated. Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi took to social media platform 'X' to criticize the Congress leader. He asserted that Kharge's comments were an affront to the six crore residents of Gujarat and to revered figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and PM Modi.
Sanghvi described the remarks as a symbol of Congress's desperation, claiming that the party, frustrated by its repeated electoral defeats, has resorted to insulting voters. He issued a clear warning: "Gujarat will not forgive this."
He accused Congress of consistently targeting Gujarat and questioned whether this criticism stemmed from the party's ousting from power in the state. Sanghvi emphasized that Kharge's statement reflects not their desperation but the true stature of Congress, asserting that the politically aware populace of Gujarat has always rejected those who disrespect the land of Gandhi and Patel, and will continue to do so.
Further Criticism from BJP Spokesperson
BJP National Spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also responded to Kharge, questioning what he thinks about the "wisdom" of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, all of whom hailed from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and other northern regions. Trivedi accused Congress of engaging in "divide and rule" politics ahead of the Kerala elections on April 9, asserting that the people of the state would respond decisively at the polls.
