Political Climate in West Bengal

The political atmosphere in West Bengal has intensified following the Trinamool Congress (TMC) defeat in the assembly elections. Mahua Moitra, the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, has reported an incident of mistreatment aboard an Indigo flight, where she faced personal attacks.

Moitra took to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to share videos showing individuals chanting slogans such as "Thief, Thief TMC Thief," and "Jai Shri Ram."

She characterized the incident as not merely a reflection of public anger but as a serious breach of her safety during the flight. Known for her firm stance against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Moitra urged Indigo to disclose the identities of the individuals involved and suggested placing them on a "no-fly list," tagging the Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in her post.

Moitra's Response and Formal Complaint

In her post, Moitra remarked, "This is BJP culture. Why is anyone surprised?" She initially chose to ignore the situation and proceeded to her meeting after landing. However, she later received videos that were being circulated by individuals associated with the BJP, prompting her to speak out.

Moitra has filed a formal complaint with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), stating that a group of four to five young men targeted her and her party with derogatory slogans. She described the experience as a verbal assault that left her with no means to escape the harassment until the disembarkation process began.

Additionally, she claimed that no Indigo staff intervened during the incident and has called for a show-cause notice against the airline's employees. As of now, Indigo has not responded to her allegations.

Details of the Incident

In her complaint, Moitra emphasized that the chants were aimed directly at her and the All India Trinamool Congress, constituting a personal attack. She expressed her frustration over being subjected to verbal abuse in a confined space, stating that she had no way to avoid the harassment until she could exit the aircraft.
