Controversy Surrounds Ajay Pal Sharma's Election Duty

Kolkata: The assignment of IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, recognized for his controversial history as an encounter specialist, as a police observer for the elections in West Bengal has sparked significant political backlash. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has labeled him a 'BJP agent'.

SP spokesperson Ashutosh Verma expressed concerns regarding Sharma's appointment, citing his past. He stated, "Examine Ajay Pal Sharma's history. He refers to himself as a so-called 'Singham' and has around 150 encounter cases against him."

Verma further questioned, "This is the same Ajay Pal Sharma who allegedly discussed prices for IPS postings in Uttar Pradesh—Rs 50 lakh for SP, Rs 25 lakh for DSP, and so forth. Given these serious allegations, how was he assigned to this role?"

He added, "It is rumored that he is an IPS officer backed by the BJP. If that is true, how can the Election Commission of India appoint such individuals? The public in Bengal is aware of how the BJP has influenced the ECI, and this time, they will vote overwhelmingly for Mamata Didi, leading to a significant defeat for the BJP."

Previously, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav criticized the decision on social media, asserting, "In West Bengal, the BJP has dispatched their trusted agents under the guise of observers to Rampur and Sambhal, but it will yield no results. Didi is here to stay!"

Yadav promised that a thorough investigation into the alleged criminal activities of these 'agents of agendas' from the BJP would occur, stating, "We will ensure they are tracked down and face legal consequences for their actions. Criminals of democracy will not escape justice!"

The situation escalated when videos emerged of Sharma warning Jehangir Khan, a candidate from the All India Trinamool Congress, regarding accusations of voter intimidation in the Falta constituency.

Sharma had arrived in response to complaints from locals about Khan's alleged threats to voters. However, Khan was absent during Sharma's visit, and both residents and police initially withheld his location. Eventually, Sharma and his team located him.

Upon arrival, Sharma discovered 14 West Bengal Police personnel present. When he inquired with the local Superintendent of Police, he learned that Khan had been assigned Y-category security with 10 officers.

Sharma pointed out this inconsistency and requested an explanation for the extra personnel.

In response, the Trinamool Congress claimed that the incident was being manipulated to sow confusion ahead of the elections.

As the political dispute continues to grow, the Election Commission has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
