Political Shift: Pradyut Bordoloi Joins BJP, Son's Future in Congress Uncertain
Political Transition in Assam
Guwahati, March 18: The recent entry of Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked discussions regarding the political trajectory of his son, Parteek Bordoloi, who remains affiliated with the Congress party in Assam.
Parteek holds the position of Co-Chairman for the Social Media Department of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and is contesting from Margherita, a constituency recognized as his father's political bastion.
In response to the unfolding situation, Pradyut Bordoloi emphasized that the political decisions made by family members are independent of each other.
“Every choice I have made has been my own. I did not have a mentor in the Congress. This morning, I had a conversation with my son, reminding him that he is an adult and must decide what is right for him,” he stated.
He clarified that his decision to join the BJP would not sway his son's political journey.
“I have made my choice for myself, and to avoid any influence on his political decisions, I will respect whatever path he chooses,” Bordoloi added.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also addressed the rumors, advising against conflating personal political choices with family ties.
“It is inappropriate to discuss children in this context. If we begin to talk about them, many issues could arise. We should keep individuals separate from their children. Tomorrow, my son might also make a different choice,” Sarma remarked during the joining ceremony in New Delhi.
He further clarified that the BJP's discussions are solely with Pradyut Bordoloi.
“I have not engaged with his son, and it would be improper to speculate on his political stance. Our focus is exclusively on Pradyut Bordoloi,” he stated.
Earlier that day, Bordoloi officially joined the BJP in New Delhi, accompanied by Sarma, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, and Union Minister Pabitra Margherita.
Describing his decision as “emotionally challenging,” the two-time MP and former minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government expressed feelings of being “suffocated and sidelined” within the party, seeking a platform where he could operate with dignity.
The BJP leadership has also indicated potential political realignments in the state, with Sarma confirming that efforts to attract leaders from other parties into the BJP will persist.
