Political Shift in Tamil Nadu: C. Joseph Vijay Meets M.K. Stalin After Historic Election Win
A Significant Political Meeting in Chennai
Chennai: In a notable political event, C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), visited the residence of his predecessor, M.K. Stalin, who is also the DMK President, on Monday. This meeting comes in the wake of a significant political realignment following the recent elections in the state.
Vijay, who recently celebrated a remarkable electoral debut with his party, met with Stalin after attending the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected MLAs in the Assembly.
The meeting has garnered significant political interest, particularly as DMK's allies played a pivotal role in facilitating the TVK's rise to power.
In the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the TVK emerged as the largest party, securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
Despite this success, the party did not reach the 118-seat threshold necessary for an outright majority. Consequently, Vijay began talks with former allies of the DMK to garner external support for forming a government.
After negotiations, the Congress party agreed to back the TVK, officially stepping away from the DMK-led coalition. Additionally, the CPI, CPI-M, VCK, and IUML also pledged their unconditional support to Vijay's government, allowing the TVK to surpass the majority requirement in the Assembly.
With this coalition support, Vijay was inaugurated as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister on May 10 during a grand ceremony in Chennai. Shortly after taking office, he initiated three major welfare programs, including free electricity for households, enhanced safety measures for women, and anti-drug initiatives across various districts.
He also convened meetings with senior officials to discuss law enforcement and the administrative agenda of his new government.
Later, Vijay honored the legacy of social reformer Periyar at his memorial, whom he regards as a significant ideological influence. He also met with K. Veeramani, the president of Dravidar Kazhagam, who extended his congratulations.
Meanwhile, political activities surged in the Assembly on Monday as the first session of the newly formed House commenced. TVK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar submitted his nomination for the Speaker's position ahead of the election.
