Political Changes Expected in Assam

Deepika Pandey Singh, a minister from Jharkhand and a Congress legislator, expressed concerns about significant political changes in the upcoming assembly elections in Assam on Monday. Speaking to the media, Singh asserted that the people of Assam have been dissatisfied with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's administration for a considerable time and are now ready for a change. She predicted that a government representing the common people will emerge in the future, with Gaurav Gogoi as the Chief Minister.


Election Announcement and Political Landscape

Just a day prior, the election commission announced that elections for all 126 assembly seats in Assam will take place in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Following this announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been implemented across all polling areas. The upcoming elections will see a contest between the BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly. The BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is aiming for a third consecutive term, while Congress is determined to reclaim power by defeating the ruling party.


2021 Election Insights and Current Focus

In the 2021 elections, the NDA coalition, formed by the BJP, AGP, and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), secured 75 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest ally in the coalition, winning 60 seats. Voter turnout was impressive, with 86.2% of over 22 million registered voters participating. While focusing on the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections, the Jharkhand minister emphasized the importance of these elections for the democratic interests of the country. She expressed confidence that Congress would also have the right to contest in the Rajya Sabha elections this time, stating, 'I am sure all our candidates will win.'


Rajya Sabha Elections Begin

The biennial Rajya Sabha elections commenced today to fill 37 seats across 10 states, with vote counting scheduled for 5 PM the same day. The terms of 37 members elected from Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will end in April, creating vacancies for new members.
