Political Shake-Up in Tamil Nadu: CM MK Stalin Resigns After Election Loss
Major Political Shift in Tamil Nadu
The resignation of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has emerged as a significant political event following the Tamil Nadu assembly election results. After facing defeat against the Tamilaga Vetrikuzhagam (TVK), the DMK leader stepped down from his position. However, in his resignation announcement, Stalin notably refrained from mentioning the victorious party by name. Throughout the election campaign and in his resignation message, as well as on social media, he referred to the winning party simply as 'that party'.
Stalin's Silence Speaks Volumes
This silence has added a political dimension to an already crucial leadership change, making Stalin's resignation more significant than just a reaction to the election results. Following the DMK's reduction to 59 seats and TVK's clear victory with 108 seats, Stalin's resignation came as a surprise. Despite the loss, his message emphasized the support received by the DMK alliance rather than focusing on the party that defeated them. He expressed gratitude to the 15.4 crore voters who backed the alliance, highlighting that the winning side only secured a lead of 17.43 lakh votes, or 3.52%.
Governor Accepts Resignation
The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, has accepted the resignation of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his cabinet, as announced by the Lok Bhavan on Tuesday. Stalin resigned following the DMK's defeat in the assembly elections. According to the statement from Lok Bhavan, the Governor has requested Stalin to remain in office 'until an alternative arrangement is made'. In the elections held on April 23 for the 234-member assembly, TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, while the DMK was reduced to 59 seats. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 47 seats.
