Political Shake-Up in Assam: Dholai MLA Resigns from BJP
Dholai MLA's Resignation Shakes BJP's Political Landscape
Silchar, Mar 19: Just hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revealed its candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, Nihar Ranjan Das, the sitting MLA from Dholai, stepped down from the party's primary membership, adding a new dimension to the political scenario in Barak Valley.
In his resignation letter directed to the BJP leadership in Assam, Das reflected on his time in office as one characterized by “honest and sincere” service, emphasizing his efforts to bolster the party's presence in Dholai.
However, he expressed disappointment over his contributions being “unrecognized,” particularly highlighting the party's decision not to grant him a ticket for the upcoming elections.
“Therefore, I am resigning from the primary membership of BJP,” Das stated, also asking to be relieved of all party duties.
His resignation letter was also shared with the Chief Minister, the party's general secretary (organization), and the president of the BJP's Cachar district unit.
This decision follows the BJP's announcement of Amiya Kanti Das as the candidate for the Dholai (SC) constituency, effectively replacing the current legislator.
Nihar Ranjan Das had previously secured his Assembly seat in a by-election after Parimal Suklabaidya was elected to the Lok Sabha from Silchar in 2024.
A lawyer by profession and a dedicated BJP member, Das won the bypoll with a margin of 9,098 votes against Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha.
This development occurs amidst a series of candidate announcements in Barak Valley, where the upcoming electoral battles are anticipated to attract significant attention.
