Political Setback for AAP Ahead of Punjab Assembly Elections as Two MLAs Resign
Resignation of Key AAP Legislators
Chandigarh. Just before the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has faced a significant political blow. Two prominent legislators—Chetan Singh Jauramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sunam—have announced their resignation from the party's primary membership. Reports indicate that both MLAs were dissatisfied and upset after their names were excluded from the first list of 40 candidates released by AAP on Saturday.
Speculations of Joining BJP
Following their resignation announcement, speculation has intensified in political circles that both leaders may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public meeting addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Chandigarh. Chetan Singh Jauramajra shared his resignation on social media, stating that he is leaving the primary membership of AAP. Similarly, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra also communicated his departure from the party via a post on Facebook.
Background of the Resigning MLAs
It is noteworthy that Chetan Singh Jauramajra previously served as a cabinet minister in the Bhagwant Mann government but was later removed from the cabinet. Additionally, the party recently appointed former Akali leader Surjit Singh Rakhra as the local in-charge for the Samana assembly seat, which has led to Jauramajra's open dissatisfaction. On the other hand, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra has been embroiled in several controversies, including legal actions and arrests related to rape and fraud cases. He has also publicly criticized his own government's management during the recent floods in Punjab.
AAP's Response to the Resignations
In response to these resignations, AAP has reacted sharply. Baltej Pannu, the party's media in-charge for Punjab, issued a statement claiming that the party had sidelined both MLAs due to their controversial activities and actions long ago. He sarcastically remarked that these leaders are now turning to a party that struggles to find qualified candidates to contest elections in Punjab.
