Overview of the Upcoming Assembly Elections

Morigaon, March 22: While it may be premature to forecast the results of the Assembly elections in the three LAC seats of Morigaon district, key political parties have already announced their candidates, with some having submitted their nomination papers.

In the previous Assembly and parliamentary elections held in 2021, voter sentiments were notably influenced by religious divisions. This trend is likely to continue in the upcoming elections.

In the Jagiroad LAC, Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika has officially filed his nomination, while the Congress party has nominated Bubul Das, a former AGP minister who switched allegiance to Congress just six months ago. It remains uncertain if Das can effectively challenge Hazarika.

In Morigaon, two-time BJP MLA Rama Kanta Deori has also filed his nomination, but he may face challenges due to anti-incumbency sentiments. Several Tiwa leaders, including Jibon Konwar, CEM of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, and Pobon Manta, have voiced their opposition to Deori's candidacy within the BJP's highest ranks.

Conversely, the Congress party has ceded the Morigaon seat to its ally, the Asam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), which has nominated Bani Kanta Das. It appears that Deori and Das will engage in a direct contest for the Morigaon LAC.

Lahorighat has historically been a stronghold for the Congress party since Independence, with the exception of 1964 when Lakshi Prasad Goswami from the Socialist Party won the seat. In this election, Dr. Asif Nazar from Congress will face off against AIUDF candidate Siddique Ahmed.
