Ammonia Gas Leak Sparks Controversy

A recent ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tiruvallur District has ignited significant political controversy. CPI(M) leader P. Shanmugam has raised serious allegations regarding negligence at the site and the illegal employment of young workers. Speaking to reporters, Shanmugam claimed that a large number of young laborers, including minors, were employed at the unit. He noted that most of the affected individuals were aged between 16 and 25 years, emphasizing that a major incident had occurred involving many child laborers. He insisted that factory inspectors from the Tamil Nadu government must conduct thorough inspections of factories, pointing out that the lack of inspections by labor department officials over the past six months contributed to this incident.

Call for Better Medical Care and Compensation

Shanmugam also stressed the importance of providing the best possible medical care to all hospitalized individuals, urging that every effort be made for their recovery. He criticized the compensation announced by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, stating that the amount of ₹2 lakh is insufficient and should be increased. He further stated, "Factory owners should provide higher compensation to the families of the deceased, and the government must take steps to ensure such compensation is granted."

Casualties and Ongoing Medical Treatment

According to the office of the Tamil Nadu Health Minister, the death toll from the ammonia gas leak at the private seafood processing and export unit in Tiruvallur District has risen to five, with 67 individuals currently receiving treatment and under medical supervision. After initial medical care, two individuals have been discharged. The incident occurred on June 21 when ammonia gas leaked during routine operations, exposing workers to the hazardous substance.
