Significant Changes Anticipated in Parliament

Since the last parliamentary session in April, the political landscape has undergone considerable transformation. The upcoming Monsoon session, commencing on July 20, is expected to showcase a new political equation and altered dynamics within the house, featuring some surprising and far-reaching changes. The session will likely witness party defections, new alliances, mergers, and a restructured seating arrangement, all indicating a tumultuous period ahead. Spanning four weeks, this session will consist of 19 meetings and will conclude on August 13.

Government's Approval for Future Sessions

Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, announced that upon the recommendation of the Government of India, President Droupadi Murmu has approved the convening of both houses of Parliament for the Monsoon session in 2026. This session is set to begin on July 20, 2026, and will last until August 13, 2026, focusing on meaningful debates and decisions on issues of national importance. The internal dynamics of the house are expected to shift due to rifts within the Trinamool Congress, defections in the Uddhav faction, and the separation of DMK from Congress.

Key Decisions Before the Session

Before the session kicks off, Speaker Om Birla will make decisions regarding the merger of 20 rebel Trinamool MPs into the lesser-known NCPI. He will also address the merger of six MPs from the Uddhav faction into Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena. Another significant change involves the alliance between Congress and TVK in Tamil Nadu, leading to the separation of the INDIA bloc from DMK. DMK has formally requested new seats from Congress for its MPs, distancing itself further.

Strengthening of NDA Amidst Opposition Weakening

These political maneuvers are expected to bolster the ruling NDA while weakening the opposition, as 20 MPs from TMC, 6 from the Uddhav faction, and 22 from DMK are set to part ways. This shift will correspondingly increase the NDA's numbers. The NDA's position in its third term has never been as strong, bringing it closer to a two-thirds majority.
