Political Dynamics in Tamil Nadu Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections
Political Alliances in Tamil Nadu: A Call for Power Sharing
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu heats up in anticipation of the 2026 assembly elections, Congress MP Manickam Tagore emphasized on Monday that alliances remain a crucial aspect of the state's political reality. He asserted that it is now time to move beyond merely discussing seat allocations and to initiate conversations about power sharing.
Responding to a recent survey conducted by a private organization, IPDS, regarding the political alliances in Tamil Nadu, Tagore remarked that the data does not fully capture the true strength of the Congress party and other political entities in the state.
He pointed out that every party has its own voter base and stressed that no party can secure electoral victory in Tamil Nadu without forming alliances. Tagore reiterated the need for discussions not only on seat distribution but also on the sharing of power.
Meanwhile, Girish Chodankar, the AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, mentioned that the Congress leadership has begun discussions with the DMK and anticipates conclusions soon. Chodankar noted that they had met with the Chief Minister and DMK president on December 3, requesting that the alliance talks be finalized promptly. He remains hopeful for a successful alliance with the DMK.
Earlier, on Sunday, MP Tagore attempted to highlight discord within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to undermine and take control of the AIADMK. He blamed AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami for transforming the AIADMK into a mere extension of the BJP.
