Owaisi's Controversial Statement

A recent comment by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has sparked a significant political discussion in the country. Owaisi expressed his desire to see a woman wearing a hijab serve as India's Prime Minister. This statement prompted a sharp response from Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who asserted that the Prime Minister of India will 'always be a Hindu,' leading to a heated exchange between the two politicians.

Details of Owaisi's Remarks

The controversy began when Owaisi addressed an election rally in Solapur, Maharashtra. He pointed out that the constitution of Pakistan allows only individuals of a specific religion to become Prime Minister, whereas Babasaheb Ambedkar's constitution provides this opportunity to every citizen of India. He stated, 'My dream is to see a daughter wearing a hijab become the Prime Minister of this country.'

Sarma's Response

In response to Owaisi's remarks, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that while the constitution does not prevent anyone from becoming Prime Minister, India is fundamentally a Hindu civilization. He expressed confidence that the Prime Minister will always be a Hindu individual.

Owaisi's Retort

On Sunday, Owaisi criticized Sarma's comments as 'narrow-minded' and reminded him of his oath to uphold the constitution. Owaisi argued that the constitution does not stipulate that only a Hindu can be Prime Minister.

Congress Joins the Criticism

Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Masood also condemned Sarma's statements. He referenced former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, noting that he was a Sikh and served as Prime Minister for ten years. Masood asserted that religion should not dictate who occupies constitutional positions.

BJP's Accusations Against Owaisi

Other BJP leaders have accused Owaisi of engaging in communal politics. BJP spokesperson Prakash Reddy claimed that Owaisi is intentionally raising the hijab issue to escalate tensions. Additionally, BJP leader RP Singh argued that many Muslim women around the world have held the positions of Prime Minister and President without wearing a hijab. He challenged Owaisi to promote a hijab-wearing woman to a significant position within his party.
