Political Tensions Rise Over Clinic Name Change

The Jharkhand government's decision to rename the Atal Mohalla Clinic to Mother Teresa Advanced Health Clinic has sparked significant political debate. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has criticized the Hemant Soren-led government, stating that while there is no issue with Mother Teresa, who was a foreigner, the state was established by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He suggested that if there is a desire to honor Mother Teresa, it should be done separately, arguing that replacing one name with another does not bring peace to her soul.

Dubey firmly stated that the state government has committed a grave and condemnable act. He expressed concerns that the Chief Minister might be preparing for another jail term, referencing previous actions. On social media, he remarked on the Congress party's tactics of religious conversion for electoral gain, highlighting that the hospital named after Vajpayee is now being renamed after a foreign figure. He warned that this reflects a mentality of making Bangladeshi nationals voters in India.

Currently, there are around 140 Atal Mohalla Clinics operational in the state, providing free primary healthcare services. These clinics were initiated by the previous BJP government, and the current JMM-Congress-RJD coalition has decided to change their names. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, with Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel confirming the approval to rename the clinics.

This initiative was launched by former Chief Minister Raghubar Das in August 2019 to address the lack of quality healthcare services in urban slums. The BJP has condemned the Jharkhand government's decision, labeling it an insult to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. BJP spokesperson Ajay Shah stated that Vajpayee was the architect of Jharkhand, and removing his name for political reasons is an affront not only to the Bharat Ratna awardee but also to the spirit of Jharkhand. The people of the state will not tolerate this.
