Political Controversy Erupts in Tamil Nadu Over Minister's Remarks on North Indian Migrants

Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

As the Tamil Nadu assembly elections approach, a political uproar has emerged following comments made by a minister from the DMK. The state's Agriculture Minister, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, sparked controversy by stating that migrants from northern India come to the state to work as table cleaners and pani puri vendors. This statement has reignited the debate surrounding the two versus three language policy, intensifying the issue of 'imposing Hindi' just weeks before the crucial elections.

The minister remarked that individuals from the north, due to their limited knowledge of languages, particularly Hindi, face restricted job opportunities in the southern state. He claimed they are compelled to take on low-level jobs, while Tamil residents benefit from the state's bilingual policy, which focuses on Tamil and English, allowing them to secure employment abroad in places like the United States and London. He stated, 'People from the north are coming to Tamil Nadu to clean tables... they are working as construction laborers and selling pani puri because they have only learned Hindi. Meanwhile, our children are going abroad... because we adhere to a bilingual policy and they have mastered English. They are going abroad and finding opportunities to earn millions... in America and London.'

In response to these remarks, the BJP criticized them as reckless and dangerous, linking them to a rise in violence against migrant workers in the state. They also questioned the silence of opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi from the INDIA bloc. As the controversy escalated, senior DMK leaders attempted to distance the party from the minister's comments. DMK MP T.R. Balu stated that Panneerselvam's remarks were misquoted and reiterated the party's longstanding opposition to the imposition of Hindi, a stance rooted in the Dravidian movement led by C.N. Annadurai.

With the assembly elections just months away, this controversy has injected new energy into Tamil Nadu's electoral landscape, bringing language politics, migrant labor issues, and north-south tensions back to the forefront of the political battle between the DMK and BJP. Leaders from various parties outside Tamil Nadu have also reacted to the minister's statement. Samajwadi Party MP Avadhesh Prasad condemned the remarks as 'cheap' and an insult to northern India, noting that the region has produced more than half of the country's prime ministers. He stated, 'This is an insult. I condemn this statement.'
