Political Fallout from School Name Change

The Bihar government's decision to rename its 'Model Schools' to 'Saraswati Vidya Niketan' and standardize the buildings' saffron color has sparked significant political debate. Both the opposition and allies within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have criticized the move, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defended it as part of an infrastructure initiative.

Inauguration of New Schools

During an event in Begusarai on Sunday, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary officially inaugurated schools for students from grades 9 to 12 under the new name. Following the inauguration, Chaudhary posted on X, stating that he inaugurated 551 Saraswati Vidya Niketan schools from the sacred land of national poet Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' in Begusarai, marking the beginning of a new educational era in Bihar. He emphasized that Bihar will progress only when its people are educated, and modern educational facilities like the FILO app, Bihar School live classes, and smart classrooms will be further enhanced.

Uniformity in School Architecture

According to reports, the Bihar education department has mandated that all schools renamed to Saraswati Vidya Niketan adhere to a uniform architectural style and color scheme. A headmaster, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that school officials were instructed to repaint the buildings promptly. Previously, there were no specific regulations regarding colors, leading to a variety of shades like yellow, pink, and sky blue being used. Under the new guidelines, all schools must have saffron-colored exteriors, white interiors in classrooms, and golden gates. The headmaster noted that the choice of colors was previously left largely to the discretion of school heads, but the new directive aims to create a consistent appearance across all model schools.

Criticism from JD(U) Leaders

In light of the news regarding the saffron coloring of government model schools, JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha remarked that education should not be associated with colors. Speaking in Patna on July 20, he supported the central government's handling of the NEET exam issue. Jha stated that education has no color and emphasized that the model schools initiated by Nitish Kumar were meant for everyone. He expressed that education should not be colored in any way.

JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar stressed that the focus should be on providing quality education rather than the color of school buildings. He pointed out that the party's core principle is based on the Constitution's preamble, which guarantees education for all religions and communities. Kumar asserted that merely changing the appearance does not ensure the right to education; the real goal should be to ensure that children receive a good education.
