BJP Gears Up for Nagaon Bypoll

Jorhat, Sept 13: As the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll approaches on October 6, political momentum is increasing, with Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expected to join the BJP's campaign after September 15.
During a press conference following the inauguration of various infrastructure projects in Jorhat, Sarma mentioned that the party's preparations are currently being managed by State BJP president Dilip Saikia and Minister Pijush Hazarika.
“I have not been actively involved in the Nagaon bypoll yet, but I plan to start campaigning after September 15 or 16,” Sarma stated.
His comments came as the BJP ramped up its organizational efforts in Nagaon, with Hazarika and Dispur MLA Pradyut Bordoloi participating in a significant joining event and public meeting organized by the Garajan Mandal of the BJP's Nagaon district unit in Rupohihat.
Rupohihat, historically a Congress bastion, saw a surge in BJP activities as the party intensified its grassroots outreach ahead of the bypoll.
In his social media updates, Hazarika noted that the increasing support for the BJP in Nagaon signifies the public's trust in Sarma's leadership and the party's development initiatives.
He expressed optimism that this momentum would carry forward with BJP candidate and former Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma.
Hazarika also inaugurated the BJP's Garajan Mandal office in Rupohihat and engaged with party members as part of the by-election preparations.
“A robust organization is essential for a successful political movement. Through unity, discipline, and ongoing grassroots efforts, we will fortify the BJP and convey our development message to every household,” Hazarika emphasized.
This surge in political activity coincides with the BJP's decision to nominate former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Sharma for the bypoll. The Election Commission has set the polling date for October 6, with results to be announced on October 9.
State BJP president Dilip Saikia confirmed that the party ticket was officially awarded to Sharma for the bypoll on Sunday.
The BJP's selection of Sharma has faced backlash from the Congress, with APCC president Gaurav Gogoi criticizing the decision to field an “outsider” and questioning Sharma's entry into electoral politics.
The Nagaon contest is anticipated to be highly competitive, with the BJP, Congress, and other parties gearing up to enhance their campaigns as polling day approaches.
