Police Seize Illegal Cough Syrup Worth One Crore in Odisha

Major Drug Bust in Jharsuguda District

Bhawanipatna, August 4 - Authorities in Odisha's Jharsuguda district have apprehended two individuals and confiscated restricted cough syrup valued at one crore rupees. This information was disclosed by officials on Tuesday.

According to police reports, a team acted on a tip-off and intercepted a truck near Tumbekela in Badmal on Monday, uncovering 197 cartons filled with cough syrup.

The seized shipment contained 23,640 bottles of 100 milliliters each, which included codeine phosphate and triprolidine hydrochloride syrup. The suspects have been identified as 38-year-old Mohammad Ehsan Ahmed from Bihar and 28-year-old Rizwan Ansari from West Bengal. Additionally, police confiscated the truck and 2.44 lakh rupees from them.

G. Reddy Raghavendra, the Superintendent of Police in Jharsuguda, stated that during interrogation, the suspects revealed that the shipment was transported from Jagannathpur in the neighboring state of Jharkhand and was intended for illegal distribution. He added, “A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the banned materials, identify the interstate supply network, determine the destination, and apprehend other members of this gang.”
