Police Seize Explosives and Ammunition in Tonk District, Rajasthan
Significant Seizure by Tonk Police
Authorities in Tonk district, Rajasthan, have apprehended two individuals following the discovery of 150 kilograms of explosive materials, 200 cartridges, and six bundles of safety fuse wire in a vehicle. This information was disclosed by the police on Wednesday.
Initial investigations suggest that the explosives were intended for use in illegal mining operations within the Aravalli region.
Ongoing Investigation
The police are continuing their investigation to determine the source of the seized materials, their intended destination, potential uses, and any connections to criminal networks. The suspects have been identified as Surendra Patwa and Surendra Mochi, both residents of Bundi district.
According to Mitrunjay Mishra, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (City) in Tonk, the accused were transporting the explosives from Bundi to Tonk. During a patrol on National Highway-52 (Tonk-Jaipur), the police intercepted the vehicle, where the suspects claimed they were carrying fertilizer in bags.
Discovery of Hazardous Materials
However, upon inspection, the bags were found to contain ammonium nitrate instead of fertilizer. In addition to the ammonium nitrate, police recovered 200 cartridges and six bundles of safety fuse wire measuring approximately 1,100 meters in length.
The vehicle used for transporting the explosives has also been confiscated. Mishra noted that the police acted swiftly following intelligence reports. This significant seizure has created a sense of alarm in the area ahead of the New Year celebrations.
Understanding Ammonium Nitrate
Ammonium nitrate is a key component of industrial explosives commonly used in open-pit mining and stone quarries. Due to its energetic properties, strict regulations govern its storage, handling, and transportation. It is legally utilized in mining operations under controlled conditions.
