Agartala, May 27: Four officers from the Teliamura Police Station in Khowai district have been placed in police custody for five days as of Monday, following allegations of misappropriation and illegal diversion of confiscated narcotics.
The individuals involved include Sub-Inspector Sampa Das, Inspector and Second Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachindra Debbarma, and Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang.
According to official reports, these officers are accused of aiding drug traffickers and unlawfully redirecting seized narcotics, particularly bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup.
A formal complaint was filed by the Additional Superintendent of Police, leading to the registration of a case at the Teliamura Police Station. In response, Khowai SP B Jagadishwar Reddy established a special investigation team to look into the matter.
Initial investigations revealed the involvement of the accused officers, prompting their suspension and subsequent arrest under applicable legal provisions.
Due to the serious nature of the allegations, the Tripura Police headquarters decided to transfer the investigation to the State Crime Branch.
On Monday, the Crime Branch's investigating officer presented the accused to the Khowai District and Sessions Court, requesting a seven-day police remand for further questioning.
After considering arguments from both parties, District and Sessions Judge Manabendra Debbarma approved a five-day police remand. The accused are expected to appear in court again on May 30.
This case is connected to a narcotics seizure that occurred in the Maharanipur area of the Teliamura subdivision on May 20, where police intercepted a significant shipment of Phensedyl. Investigators suspect that approximately 1,381 bottles from this shipment were diverted and sold rather than being officially recorded as seized evidence.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation will continue to uncover the full scope of the alleged conspiracy and identify any other individuals involved.
