Police Operation in Assam Leads to Injuries of Suspected Insurgents

Sivsagar, May 25: In a police operation on Sunday at Bogidol Madhuri Molai village in Assam's Sivasagar district, two individuals suspected to be affiliated with the banned insurgent group ULFA-I sustained injuries following an alleged extortion attempt aimed at a local businessman.
The injured suspects have been identified as Ritu Gogoi and Jitu Gogoi, both from Bogidol Molai village. Ritu has been transferred to Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital for further treatment, while Jitu is currently receiving care at Sivasagar Civil Hospital.
According to reports from the Assam Police, a group of six young men arrived on three motorcycles with the intention of collecting extortion money from businessman Lachit Gogoi, who had reportedly been receiving threats for an extended period.
During a press briefing on Monday night, Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia stated that the suspects opened fire upon noticing police officers present at the scene.
“Six individuals arrived on three motorcycles. Upon seeing the police, they fired at our personnel. In response, we returned fire. Two of our officers were injured in the exchange, and two of the suspects were hit, with one being referred to Dibrugarh for treatment,” the SSP explained.
Authorities reported that four other suspects managed to escape the scene, prompting a manhunt to locate them.
“We cannot confirm if those who fled are ULFA-I members. An investigation is underway, and more information will be available soon,” added Papori Chetia.
Additionally, police recovered firearms and motorcycles from the location, although they did not disclose specifics regarding the weapons or the amount of extortion money allegedly sought from the businessman.
The investigation into this incident is currently ongoing.
