Incident Overview

Guwahati, March 25: A police officer stationed at the Baksa district jail suffered a serious gunshot wound late Tuesday night, raising alarms and prompting an investigation into the event.

Injured Officer's Condition

The officer, identified as Gunojit Baishya from Baghmara in Bajali district, is currently receiving intensive medical care at AIIMS Guwahati in Changsari after being transferred from a local facility due to the critical nature of his injuries.

Details of the Incident

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident took place within the jail compound while Baishya was on duty. Initial assessments suggest a potential suicide attempt involving his service weapon, although authorities are also considering the possibility of an accidental discharge.

Medical Response

A medical professional at Dr. Ravi Boro Civil Hospital in Mushalpur, where Baishya was initially treated, reported that he arrived around 9:55 PM with a gunshot wound. The examination revealed a bullet entry and exit wound, indicating the bullet had traversed his body. Due to the absence of advanced ICU facilities, he was referred to a more equipped medical center in Nalbari or Guwahati.

Family Reactions

Family members expressed their shock and denied any awareness of personal issues that could have led to such an incident. His brother stated, “There was no conflict at home. He went to work as usual. I learned about the incident from villagers later. He joined the force in 2022 and has now been moved to AIIMS Guwahati for better care.”

His sister echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that she had spoken to him just a day prior and found nothing amiss. “I spoke to him the day before yesterday, and everything seemed normal. He even talked to our mother around 9:30 PM last night. We were informed about the incident only around 10:30 PM. We are unaware of what transpired inside,” she said.

Community Response

Residents from Baishya’s village expressed disbelief, describing him as a calm and well-mannered individual. “We were shocked to hear that Gunojit had allegedly attempted suicide. He has always been a quiet and composed person. We were not aware of any stress he might have been facing,” a villager remarked, suggesting that accidental firing could also be a possibility.

Final Remarks

Baishya, who joined the police force in 2022, is the son of a farmer and leaves behind his mother, two brothers, and two sisters. Notably, sources indicated that before losing consciousness, he reportedly uttered the phrase “Joi Zubeen,” although the meaning behind this statement remains unclear.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain whether the incident was an attempted suicide, an accidental discharge, or involved other factors.
