Police File Case Against Unknown Woman for Displaying Protests Signs in Bengaluru

Incident at Freedom Park Sparks Police Action

Bengaluru, July 26 - Authorities have registered a case against an unidentified woman for allegedly displaying placards in support of jailed activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam during a student protest at Freedom Park. Both Khalid and Imam are facing charges related to the 2020 Delhi riots. The case was initiated based on a complaint from a police sub-inspector who was on duty at the event.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred between 5:00 and 5:30 PM on Friday when a large group of protesters was chanting slogans. The officer reported seeing a young woman holding placards that read slogans such as 'Long Live Umar Khalid', 'Long Live Sharjeel Imam', and 'Remove BLR Police'. The complaint stated that the officer attempted to seize the placards but was allegedly obstructed by other protesters who hid them.

Despite searching the surrounding area due to the large crowd, the placards could not be located. The police complaint noted, 'Subsequently, CCTV footage from Freedom Park and recordings from officers on camera duty were reviewed. It was found that an unidentified young woman deliberately displayed inflammatory placards aimed at inciting unrest and disturbing public peace.' The complaint further requested legal action against the unidentified woman for intentionally showing provocative placards during a peaceful protest. The police confirmed that a case has been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
